Senior Backend Engineer (Remote)

Specialize in advanced payment method optimization, settlement systems, and complex financial integrations. This role focuses on building sophisticated backend services that handle the intricacies of oil and gas industry payment workflows, including convenience fee processing, split funding architecture, and advanced payment processor relationship management.

Core Responsibilities

• Advanced Payment Processing: Implement complex payment flows including convenience fee handling, Level 2/3 processing, and recurring payment capabilities
• Settlement Architecture: Design and build automated settlement scheduling, split funding systems, and reconciliation processes
• Payment Processor Management: Manage relationships and integrations with multiple payment processors, implementing failover and routing logic
• Financial Data Services: Develop services for transaction reporting, analytics, and compliance reporting specific to oil and gas industry requirements
• Integration Services: Build robust integration layers for future ERP system connections
• Webhook Infrastructure: Design scalable webhook delivery systems with retry logic, failure handling, and event ordering
• Fraud Detection: Implement advanced fraud detection algorithms and risk management systems
• Performance Optimization: Optimize database queries and service performance for high-volume transaction processing

What They Will NOT Do

• Frontend Development: Will not work on UI components, user interfaces, or client-side applications
• Infrastructure Management: Will not handle cloud setup, CI/CD pipelines, or deployment automation
• Direct Client Interaction: Will not participate in merchant onboarding or customer support activities
• Project Coordination: Will not manage timelines, stakeholder communication, or cross-team coordination
• Manual Testing: Will not perform systematic testing or quality assurance beyond unit testing
• Business Analysis: Will not define business requirements or conduct market research

Key Accountabilities & KPIs

• Transaction Volume Capacity: Support processing of $5M+ monthly transaction volume
• Settlement Accuracy: Achieve 99.99% accuracy in settlement calculations and disbursements
• Integration Reliability: Maintain 99.9% uptime for all payment processor integrations
• Performance Optimization: Handle 1000+ concurrent transactions with <500ms processing time
• Data Integrity: Ensure zero data loss and 100% transaction traceability
• Fraud Prevention: Implement systems achieving <0.1% fraud rate while maintaining <2% false positive rate
• API Reliability: Deliver backend APIs with 99.95% availability and comprehensive error handling

Required Technical Skills

• Backend Technologies: 5+ years with C#/.NET Core, ASP.NET Web API, background services
• Database Expertise: Advanced SQL Server, stored procedures, performance tuning, indexing strategies
• Payment Industry Knowledge: Deep understanding of payment processing, ACH networks, card processing flows
• Financial Systems: Experience with settlement systems, reconciliation processes, financial reporting
• Integration Patterns: Message queues, event-driven architecture, webhook systems, API gateway patterns
• Security Implementation: Encryption, tokenization, PCI DSS compliance, secure coding practices
• Performance Optimization: Caching strategies, database optimization, high-concurrency processing
• Cloud Services: Azure services (Service Bus, Functions, Logic Apps), microservices architecture

Preferred Capabilities

• Previous experience in fintech, banking, or payment processing companies
• Experience with high-volume financial transaction systems (>$10M monthly)
• Understanding of regulatory compliance requirements (PCI DSS, SOX, financial regulations)
• Experience with real-time payment systems and instant settlement
• Knowledge of advanced fraud detection and machine learning applications
• Familiarity with financial data standards and reporting requirements
